Hosanna in the Highest

Give Him the GLORY in Word and Deed!!

Story of Psalm Sunday as a kid…

After reading all the accounts…Matthew kept on drawing me back…let’s read

Matthew 21:1-11 The Triumphal Entry

21 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” 4 This took place to fulfill (this is typical Matthew as convinces his people that Jesus is truly the Messiah) what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

5 “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt,[a] the foal of a beast of burden.’”

The Old Testament prophesied a foretelling about 600 years before Palm Sunday in

Zechariah 9:9 - "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."

6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. 8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

1. What they Did -- What are You Doing?

Spread their cloaks -- It was a token of their subjection to him. Those that take Christ for their king must lay their all under his feet. Bow down so that He might go over.

We live in a world that wants Jesus as their Savior but not as their Lord!

Cut down branches from the trees -- As in the feast of tabernacles. The palm branch represented goodness and victory and was symbolic of the final victory He would soon fulfill over death.

The palm branch is a symbol of victory, triumph, peace, and eternal life originating in the ancient Near East and Mediterranean world. ... The palm has meaning in Christianity as

well Christian iconography to represent victory, i.e. the victory of the spirit over the flesh, and is prophetic of the book of revelation.

Revelation 7:9 “After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne and to the Lamb! And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.

9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

2. What they Said -- What are You Saying?

They were welcoming the Kingdom and wishing well the Kingdom.

When the people shouted "Hosanna!" they were hailing Christ as King. That word actually means "save now," and though in their own minds they waited for an earthly king, God had a different way in mind of bringing true salvation to all who would trust in Him.

It is our duty to wish well the Kingdom of God!!

This is bigger than us, it is bigger than my opinions, it is bigger than my political view, it’s bigger than the country we live in, it’s bigger than the totality of time that we live in, it’s a Kingdom mindset.

"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD!" Ps. 118:26

--Let prosperity in the highest degree attend him

--let him have a name above every name

--a throne above every throne;

--or let us praise him in the best manner for his church ascend to heaven,

--to the highest heavens, and fetch in peace and salvation from then

When the people shouted "Hosanna!" they were hailing Christ as King. That word actually means "save now," and though in their own minds they waited for an earthly king, God had a different way in mind of bringing true salvation to all who would trust in Him.

"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD!" Ps. 118:26

And when we give God glory in word and song and worship…

And when we give God glory in deed,, in our actions…

We are surrendering and subjecting ourselves to His Lordship

This is what happens…

10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Imagine your city

being stirred up so that you could declare to those who are in need

“This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

This is what Palm Sunday is all about…the chance to declare His kingdom now!!

As we lay our cloaks, and wave our branches, and declare Hosanna.

In word and in deed.

Until we wait to declare His kingdom then…
